Newark in the News

With the Newark by-election around the corner, Newark is certainly in the spotlight with the Prime Minister, Mayor of London and several Government Ministers making trips to the area within the last couple of weeks.

This is a great time for the local area and hopefully showcases some of the great places to live and work and with the Prime Minister and several key Government Ministers making time to visit locally based firms Timico, British Sugar, Newark Advertiser and DSGi (the Currys and PC World Warehousing and Distribution Hub) it shows a positive light on employment as well as a strong place for business and commerce.

It is also a great chance for local people to discuss important issues including hospital services, ambulance response times and GP services as well as railway and transport provisions - topics which are all key to the main parties campaigns.

Newark by-election Hustings

The Prime Minister offered words of encouragement for Newark's premier by-election hustings which happened last week. The event, which was hosted at the Magnus Church of England Academy was jointly organised by the Newark Advertiser, the Newark Business Club and the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce.

Whilst visiting the local area, the Prime Minister commented that Political hustings are a custom in our democracy which has gone back many decades.

"It is great to see the Newark Advertiser and other local organisations continuing the tradition by setting up Tuesday’s event."

"I am sure it will be a success.”

The panel comprised of Mr Robert Jenrick (Con) Mr Roger Helmer (UKIP) Mr Michael Payne (Lab) Mr David Watts (Lib Dem) and Mr David Kirwan (Green). Parties who have an elected representative in Westminster or in the European Parliament have been invited to take part.

The Chairman of Newark Business Club, Michelle Allen chaired the event and ensured answered were concise and within the set response time (some of which certainly overran!)

Several topics were covered, including the privatisation of the East Coast Mainline railway, the Newark A&E department, a 'living wage', the East Midlands Ambulance Service as well as Wind Turbines and alternative energy sources.
